Tempora Heroica is a MUD best known for its descriptive fantasy world, and for having a system of magic derived from the Ars Magica roleplaying game. Tempora Heroica is Latin for "the Heroic Age". The phrase was coined by the Greek poet Hesiod and was one of the five "Ages of Man".
Each player chooses to be a member of one of the four kiths: the Faerie Kith consisting of brownie, elves, pixies, satyrs, and selkies; the Hominid Kith consisting of humans and halflings; the Jotun Kith consisting of giants, ogres, and trolls; and the Nibelung Kith consisting of dwarves, gnomes, and goblins. The game world is centered around the town of Wivernhoe.
In June 2005, a new combat engine and new skill system was introduced. The combat engine uses events, instead of the rounds or turns found in most roleplaying game, to regulate battles. Players are able to queue tactics before and during combat. The skills system arranges skills in a tree and skills are improved through use.
[edit] History
Tempora Heroica is the descendant of Archipelago MUD that ran from 1993 till 1995 at the University of Essex in East Anglia, England. Archipelago was based on the CircleMUD 2.2 code and was administered by Ponder and Kalliste. At the end of August 1996, Ponder left the University of Essex, placed a cleaned-up version of the Archipelago code on the CircleMUD ftp site and handed over the Archipelago administration to Magnifico (David Czeck), who moved Archiplego to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In December 1996, due to conflicts within the adminstration, Magnifico resigned and created a spin-off, Tempora Heroica, in April 1997. The MUD's code base is still referred to as Archipelago. In 1999, Tempora Heroica moved to its present home at ibiblio.
