EmlenMud is a NiMUD derived codebase created by Owen Emlen (Orin) and Greg Richardson (Smack) which was privately released in 1995. The codebase is most notable for its classless skill system (a feature of NiMUD), and splitting up the player base in two opposing PK factions, whities and darkies. EmlenMud started out as TIAC, a MUD owned by Mark Griebling (Plato), based on the pre v1.0 NiMUD release running at toybox.tiac.net:4321 as early as November 1994. [1][2] TIAC was killed by the machine's administrators in december 1994 and found a new home at future.success.net:4321 and was subsequently renamed as Mortal Conquest.[3]
The Mortal Conquest crew, existing of Owen Emlen, Simon Lee, Daniel Biegal, and Mark Griebling, broke up in 1995, with Emlen and Richardson going on to work on Midpoint Void, the first EmlenMud.[4] Late 1995 Owen Emlen got tired of the administrative side of MUD development and began privately distributing EmlenMud, typically charging 200 dollars for support, arguably in violation of the DikuMUD license.[5][6]
Notable EmlenMUDs were Void2/Void of Reality (1995), Rites of Passage (1996), Aturion Dynasty (1996), Lands of Chaos (1998), EverWar (1998), Fate (1999), and Methods of Destruction (2000).[7][8][9][10][11][12]
Owin Emlen illegally sold at least one copy of EmlenMUD, thereby violating the Diku, Merc and NimUD licenses.
